Leila Rice Obituary

Manlius-Leila E. Rice, 81, a former Oneida resident, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2022, with her family by her side, at the Crouse Hospital, Syracuse, following a lengthy illness. 

Leila was born in Oneida on, February 24, 1940, the daughter of the late Otto C. and Viola M. Petland Serviss. She grew up in Oneida, and was a graduate of Oneida High School.  Leila went on to further her education by graduating from the Rochester School of Nursing.  She was dedicated to her profession as a nurse.  Leila retired from Crouse Hospital with thirty years of devoted care, having been an RN on the maternity and delivery floor.   She had lived numerous years at Oneida Towers.  Leila went on to live with her daughter Kathy, and her family in 2020.  She was thrilled to be there as a caregiver to her grandchildren, affectionately known as Nana.  Leila was a deeply religious person and a parishioner of the Catholic Faith.  She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s, St. Patrick’s, St. Agatha’s Catholic Church, and St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church of Utica.  Leila will always be remembered, for her belief in God, her devotion to her family, and the joy of helping thousands of newborns entering our world.     

She is survived by her beloved daughter Kathy Halbritter and son-in-law.  Leila is also survived by her cherished and loved grandchildren: Ashely Halbritter, Lily Halbritter, Daniel Halbritter, and Cami Halbritter.  She also is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Lynda Serviss of Oneida.   She leaves behind several nieces and nephews.                                                                    

She was predeceased by her parents Otto and Viola, and her brothers, Keith and Kenny Serviss.

Leila’s family will gather privately to celebrate her Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. There will be no public calling hours.  Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. The care of Leila and her family, has been entrusted to Jeffrey T.
