Oneida-Joann Hannel, 67, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at the Oneida Healthcare Center.
Joann was born in Oneida on January 1, 1954, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen Wassel Curro. She grew up in Oneida and was a graduate of Oneida High School. On May 6, 1972, Joann married Bruce B. Hannel Sr., at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. She was a stay-at-home wife and mother. In addition to caring for her family, she had to endure the ups and downs of Bruce’s Army career. Upon Bruce’s retirement, they resettled back in Oneida. Joann loved to prepare her home for holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, with elaborate decorations. These preparations brought much joy to her, but moreover her children and grandchildren. It was not only the holidays that were special for Joann, but anytime her family would gather. She was an avid Bingo Player and enjoyed games shows like “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Price is Right.” She loved to play along , and the shows would always put a smile on her face. Joann’s world was complete due to the love of her family and faith.
She is survived by her beloved husband and soul mate of 50 years, Bruce B. Hannel Sr. of Oneida; her two sons and daughters-in-laws Bruce B. Jr., and Miranda Hannel of Oneida, and Patrick E. and Nicole Hannel of Sanford, ME; her sister Mary Lou Hewitt of Oneida; her two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank “Bubby” and Cheryl Curro of Oneida, and Steve and Sue Curro of Durhamville. Joann is also survived by her beloved and cherished 6 grandchildren. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews.
Joann was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Helen, and her brother Patrick E. “Buzzy” Curro.
