Obituary

Verona-Jeffrey V. Mackey, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, with the love and support of his family at his side, at Upstate University Hospital, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident that occurred on December 24, 2021.

Jeff was born on December 12, 1940, in Middletown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Layton and Mary Wright Mackey. He was raised in Sylvan Beach and was a graduate of Camden High School.  He proudly served in The United States Air Force, honorably discharged in 1965.  Jeff later went on to work for Carrier Corporation with 30 years of service, retiring in 1993. He married Helen Helenbeck on February 8, 1964 in Durhamville. Their loving union lasted 52 years until Helen’s passing in 2016.  Jeff was a devoted member of the Friendship Baptist Church.  He also was a member of the Verona VFW Post 6811. He was known in Ham Radio Community as KA2BBR. He enjoyed extended road trips to various places discovering new sights, and new acquaintances along the journey. Jeff’s favorite travel was to the Penn Can Truck Stop located in Harford, PA.  He would always enjoy the food that truck stop restaurant served, along with a friendly atmosphere, and enjoyed visiting with fellow diners.  Jeff was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.   His family was the “center” of his life.

He is survived by his children: Yavonne (Robert) Relyea of Canastota, Sherry (Dave) Winchell of Canastota, Eugene Mackey of Delphi Falls, Daniel Mackey of Fulton, and John Mackey of Bridgeport; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; 2 nephews; and two cousins.

Jeff was predeceased by his parents Layton and Mary; his beloved Helen Mackey; his beloved granddaughter, Stephanie M. Palmer; and his sister Bonney Ennett.

Services for Jeff will be conducted on Friday, January 21, 2022, at 1 PM, with the Rev. Bill Case, pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church, officiating, at the Coolican-McSweeney & Paul Funeral Home, 322 Washington Avenue in Oneida.  There will be a visitation from 11:30 AM to 1 PM, prior to the service.
