Verona-Harland, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 14, 2022, with the love and support of his family.
He was born on June 26, 1927 in Danby, New York, the son of the late Arthur and Beula Beeman Ayers. He was a WW ll Navy Veteran. Harland made is life-long career as a civilian employee of Griffiss Air Force Base. He started in building maintenance, later he was trained as an electronics technician, and retired as the supervisor of the Electronics Department. In total he served 39 years at Griffiss, retiring in 1993. When not working, Harland was an avid HAM Radio Operator. He was a member of Oneida’s Thomas Fowler American Legion Post #169. Harland enjoyed dining out with his family, and especially loved the Sylvan Beach restaurants. In his later years, he loved to travel locally to meet and greet any person he came across. Harland was an outgoing “people person,” and a devoted father and grandfather.
Harland is survived by his son, Butch, and (partner, Anne Horodnick) of Rome; his daughter, Tracie Ayers of Canastota; his granddaughters, Lisa Woodard, (partner Mike Decker) and Chrissy Lipscomb, (husband Drew Lipscomb); and his grandson, James Ayers (wife Tammy Ayers); and his great grandchildren: Tyler Ayers, Jaden Ayers, and Chase Jerman.
Harland was predeceased by his wife Charlotte Lewis Ayers; and his beloved daughter, Shanna Ayers.
Calling hours for Harland will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, from 12 to 2 PM, at the Coolican-McSweeney & Paul Funeral Home, 322 Washington Avenue in Oneida. A spring burial with Military Honors will held in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Durhamville.
